Irene has raised over £1,000 to support people with Spinal Cord Injury
I signed up to the Aspire Channel Swim because I have been a member of the Aspire Leisure Centre for 15 years and so I have seen many people with spinal cord injuries who come to use the Centre.
I try to come at least three times a week but I don’t just swim; I do the seated exercise on Mondays and Wednesdays, as well as Aqua Therapy and Aqua Calm. I enjoy being a member because the Centre has easy access to all areas for disabled people and it’s a great way to make new friends, whilst trying to do the best I possibly can.
My swimming experience is basic. I enjoy swimming but this is a very big challenge for me as I’ve never done anything like this before. I’m hoping to complete the Swim by 2nd December, but I missed the first two 2 weeks because I was not well enough to swim. Over the 12 weeks, I’m hoping to get fitter and a bit more movement in my legs.
Fundraising is interesting, but not easy. When I ask for donations I try to promote Aspire Leisure Centre and Aspire because of the great work they do for people with all types of disabilities. It means a lot to me to raise money to help people with Spinal Cord Injury because it can happen to anyone - you don’t know what the future holds.
