We got up, close and personal with Aspire's Event Manager, Katy Boyd to find out all about her role, her inspiration and her biggest achievement to date!

When did you start working for Aspire?

I started working for Aspire 4 years ago. I applied for an administrator role, and since then I’ve worked on all elements of the Aspire Channel Swim, along with most of Aspire’s events! I’m now the Aspire Events Manager and love seeing the challenge grow each year with more and more amazing swimmers taking part, and hearing the difference the challenge makes to both participants and Spinal Cord Injured people.

What inspired you to work at Aspire?

The difference Aspire makes to people with Spinal Cord Injury is totally life changing. The NHS and UK government doesn’t provide sufficient support; most people who sustain an SCI are left with inadequate housing, an inappropriate wheelchair and no help in claiming the benefits they’re entitled to, leaving them unable to live their lives independently. A spinal cord injury changes everything, but it shouldn’t stop people from living their lives as fully as they did before their injury. Aspire couldn’t do this without its amazing swimmers!

What have been your biggest achievements since you started working for the charity?

I’d say the thing I’m most proud of is delivering the Aspire Channel Swim to its biggest year ever! The challenge has been running since 1999 and it’s great to see more and more people heading to their pools and spreading the word about Aspire. We’re aiming for 8,000 swimmers this year, which would be phenomenal.

What would you say to those who are looking to get involved with the Aspire Channel Swim?

You can do it! Swimming 22 miles is a huge challenge, but with determination, a snazzy Zoggs swimming costume, and us to cheer you on, you can conquer the Channel. If you need any advice, support, or want to let us know how you’re getting on we’re only a phone call or email away. Make sure to join our community of swimmers on Facebook (/AspireChannelSwim), Twitter (/AspChannelSwim) and Instagram (/AspireChannelSwim) too to keep up to date with the latest news and see what your fellow Aspire Channel Swimmers are up to!
